What’s new in the 2020 Kona?
Before we dive into the real meat and potatoes of the Kona’s powertrain, we thought we’d quickly highlight what’s new in the subcompact crossover for the 2020 model year. The new Smart Cruise Control technology was added to the Ultimate trim levels, which is the biggest news. Beyond that, the SEL with Tech Package trim was renamed SEL Plus while the Iron Man Edition trim was discontinued. SEL Plus adds the 4.2” multi-info display and wireless device charging, moving down from the Ultimate trim, while a new orange interior accent color was made available on the Limited trim when equipped with Sunset Orange exterior paint.
Now that we’ve given you the rundown on what’s new, let’s dive into the Kona’s engine options. A 2.0L 4-cylinder engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission comes standard on the model, generating 147 horsepower alongside 132 pound-feet of torque. The transmission even features SHIFTRONIC manual-shifting mode, a technology that allows you to shift as if you had a manual vehicle.
The upper-level Limited and Ultimate trim levels are instead powered by a 1.6L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, which pumps power up to 175 hp and 195 lb-ft. of torque. This engine is instead paired with a seven-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission, which improves efficiency and acceleration while offering seamless transitions.
