At the 2020 Chicago Auto Show last week, Hyundai finally unveiled the all-new 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Adopting the design changes of the regular 2020 Sonata, the Sonata Hybrid also includes a host of other great upgrades and new features. Perhaps the most exciting thing about it is that the Blue trim level delivers best-in-class fuel economy on the highway and combined. With an EPA-estimated 52 miles per gallon combined, the Blue trim level also has an incredible driving range of 686 miles. While the specifics likely won’t begin to be unveiled for quite some time, there was some very intriguing and exciting information unveiled recently from the Hyundai camp reminiscent of something the brand did recently. Around this time in 2017, Hyundai laid out its plans to introduce eight new or re-engineered crossover utility vehicles by 2020. The new plan? Hyundai always brings an incredible display to the annual SEMA Show each year, and this year is already proving to keep with that trend as Hyundai prepares for the event. This year, the Specialty Equipment Market Association auto show will take place from the 5th to the 8th of November at its usual location, the Las Vegas Convention Center. In preparing for the show, Hyundai engineering teams built two special concept vehicles and then attempted to break the land speed record for their respective categories.
While we don’t carry the NEXO FCEV here at Cocoa Hyundai, it di finish an impressive 106.160 mph run for the hydrogen fuel cell category. The second vehicle, however, was a specially outfitted 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. It finished with a speed of 164.669 in the gas-electric hybrid category. Hyundai continues to innovate year after year, introducing new revolutionary technologies meant to improve the way their vehicles operate. Most recently, Hyundai developed the world’s first Active Shift Control transmission technology for hybrid vehicles like the Ioniq. The innovative system is meant to optimize the efficiency of the transmission by monitoring gear shifts 500 times per second. As it monitors, the system adjusts the rotation speed precisely to enable faster shift times.
