Out of all the automotive awards handed out throughout the industry year after year – and there are a ton of them – none is more important than the North American Car of the Year award. It is without a doubt the most prestigious award handed out to sedans each year, typically announced at the North American International Auto Show each year in Detroit. This year, a Hyundai vehicle is in the running to win the honor, but which one is it? The all-new 2021 Hyundai Elantra.

“To make it to the top three is a real honor for us given a field of strong competitors. The Elantra family has lots of choices for customers. If you are looking for technology, performance or fuel economy we have you covered.”
– Olabisi Boyle, Vice President of Product Planning & Mobility Strategy, Hyundai motor North America
Who chooses the winner?
This year, the finalists were selected by a large jury of 50 individuals. Each juror is well respected in their field, belonging to the media in print, radio, broadcast or even online throughout the United States and Canada. The jury chooses finalists based on a handful of criteria, including:
- Leadership within segment
- Innovative features and content
- Overall design
- Safety features and ratings
- How well the vehicle handles
- How satisfied drivers are
- Overall financial value
When will we learn the winner?
This year’s winner will be announced at a virtual event sometime in January, rather than on its typical stage at NAIAS. It remains to be seen whether this will be at a virtual version of the prestigious auto show, or at some other virtual event.
Check back throughout January for more information, and to find out if the Hyundai Elantra wins.
