2018 Hyundai Kona vs 2018 Ford EcoSport
The subcompact crossover segment has shown no signs of slowing down as more and more manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon. The 2018 model year not only saw our own entry into the class, but Ford put forth its own subcompact crossover model as well. We thought we’d see how these two subcompact crossovers measure up to one another by pitting the 2018 Hyundai Kona vs 2018 Ford EcoSport.
The Hyundai Kona was just one of the earliest examples of Hyundai utility vehicle renaissance, as it has promised to introduce a number of new crossovers and SUVs by 2020. The Ford EcoSport is actually a model that has existed for a decade and a half in other regions, but the brand has finally brought it to the North American market. The table below will give you a better idea of how exactly these two models fare against one another.
2018 Hyundai Kona
2018 Ford EcoSport
|147 HP||Horsepower||123 HP|
|2,890 lbs.||Curb Weight||3,060 lbs.|
|30 mpg||Combined Fuel Efficiency||28 mpg|
|19.2 cu. ft.||Cargo Capacity||20.9 cu. ft.|
Advantages of the 2018 Kona
As you can see, the two vehicles are comparable to one another, but each has its own clear advantages. We’ll start in the first row, which takes a look at horsepower. Horsepower isn’t as important in a small crossover like this as it is in bigger models, but an advantage of 24 HP is still a pretty big deal, especially when combined with the fact that the Kona weighs 170 pounds less than its Ford competitor. The lighter a vehicle is the easier it is to get up and go, so that lighter curb weight only adds onto the increased horsepower.
Despite the power advantage, the Kona also manages to achieve better mileage than the EcoSport by offering an extra 2 miles per gallon combined. While this isn’t a massive advantage, it will lead to a bit of saving at the gas pump over time. The EcoSport does fire back in the final row, however, offering 1.7 extra cubic feet of space to fill with whatever you need to bring along.
