The Hyundai Tucson might not be as recognizable as its big sibling the Santa Fe, but it has been making waves in the compact segment since it was first introduced in 2004. We wanted to show its worth and that it has just as much to offer as the Santa Fe by pitting the Tucson against one of its fiercest competitors, and we decided to accomplish this by pitting the 2018 Hyundai Tucson vs 2018 Ford Escape.
Just a simple glance at the table above shows how comparable these two vehicles are to one another, which might be a surprise to some. The Ford Escape is one of the most iconic compact crossovers on the market today, but the Tucson holds its own and even pulls out an advantage in a key aspect, shown in the first row. We started with fuel efficiency, and when analyzing the combined fuel economy rating across highway and city driving, the Tucson delivers an extra 2 miles to the gallon. That’s not a mind-blowing advantage by any means, but it’ll certainly save you some change in the long run.
The Escape fires back in the second row with a power advantage, but it’s even smaller. 4 horsepower is hardly even worth noting, but it is an advantage and we want to be transparent. Plus, giving up 2 miles per gallon should mean a much bigger power advantage, but that’s not seen here as the Tucson continues to hold its own.
The biggest setback for the Tucson is the unfortunate fact that the Escape offers an extra 3 cubic feet of space in the cargo hold, which we cannot argue with. That’s enough space for an extra bag or two of groceries or maybe even a suitcase. However, the Tucson and Escape do offer the same number of seats. If you can look past the subtle disadvantages for the immense style, incredible suite of features, and slight efficiency boost, then the 2018 Hyundai Tucson is for you.
