The subcompact sedan segment might be one of the smaller car segments on the market, but it is still filled with fierce competition whether you’re looking for an ordinary sedan or a hatchback. Our own entry into the segment, the 2019 Hyundai Accent, makes an outstanding option in our opinion. But it has plenty of competitors that are fine choices as well. So, we thought we’d see how it measures up to one of those rivals by pitting it against the 2019 Nissan Versa.
The Hyundai Accent has been a member of the lineup since all the way back in 1994. It’s undergone several generational shifts and facelifts, the most recent of which occurred for the 2018 model year as it entered its fifth generation. The Nissan Versa on the other hand has been around since 2011.
As you can see from a simple glance at the table just above, these two sedans are rather comparable to one another, though each has its clear advantages. For instance, kicking this off in the first row, the Accent generates an extra 21 horsepower more than the Nissan Versa. 21 might not seem like a huge advantage, but that is a sizeable leg up in terms of power. Then in the second row, despite having superior power, the Accent still takes the lead in terms of fuel efficiency as well, though 1 mile per gallon isn’t going to be that noticeable of a difference.
In the third row, the Nissan sedan does finally fire back with an advantage of its own, in the form of an extra 1.2 cubic feet of space in its trunk to fill with whatever cargo you need to bring along with you. The fourth row just shows that both cars offer seating for up to 5. If you can overlook that leg up in space, then the Accent might be the sedan for you.
