Admittedly, when you think sports car, the Hyundai Veloster is probably not the first vehicle to pop into you head. But it is a sports coupe with a kammback, a rare feature on today’s market. We wanted to see how our little-known sports car measures up to another underappreciated sports coupe by pitting the 2019 Hyundai Veloster vs 2019 Toyota 86.
The Hyundai Veloster first made its introduction as a concept car all the way back in 2007 before joining the lineup in 2011. It was seemingly discontinued in 2017, though it turned out Hyundai was just taking the year off as the company reintroduced it with a generational shift for 2019. The Toyota 86 has been around international since 2012, or here in America as the Scion FR-S. It officially became the Toyota 86 stateside after Scion closed its doors in 2016.
As you can tell from the table above, the two sports coupes are quite similar to one another though each vehicle has its clear advantages. We started things off with fuel efficiency in the first row, and in what is probably a surprising twist to Toyota fans, the Veloster trumps the 86 by getting an extra six miles to the gallon combined. Toyota is known for delivering incredible fuel efficiency, but it sacrificed quite a bit to give the 86 its power.
Speaking of power, that’s where we go in the second row. The Toyota 86 only delivers an extra 4 horsepower, but that number combined with other factors does lead to the spec in the fourth row, which highlights the fact that the 86 can get from 0 to 60 miles per hour half a second faster than the Veloster. The third row looks at cargo capacity, an area in which the kammback Veloster is obviously superior.
