It might not be the first nameplate to come to mind when you think of the most iconic models on the Hyundai lineup, but in truth the Hyundai Accent has one of the longest legacies of the brand. It’s the third longest-running vehicle still on the lineup, not trailing behind the Sonata and Elantra by much, having been introduced back in 1994. Just recently, for the 2018 model year, the Accent was completely redesigned and entered its third generation, leaving it relatively fresh on the lineup.
We thought we’d see how this subcompact sedan measures up to one of its biggest competitors by pitting the 2020 Hyundai Accent against the 2020 Kia Rio, which was also recently renovated in 2017. These two models are some of the strongest on the entry-level sedan market, so how do the fare against one another?
As you can see with a simple glance through the table up above, these two sedans are incredible comparable to one another. The first half of the table looks at fuel economy alone, an area in which the Accent does have a leg up, but only a small one. Driving through the city will get you a superior economy of a single mile per gallon, while hopping on the highway doubles that advantage to 2 mpg.
Unfortunately, this leaves the Accent open for the Rio to surpass it in horsepower; however, 10 hp is about as significant an advantage as the Accent’s superior efficiency. Especially taking into account that the Accent has a curb weight that is 212 pounds lighter than the Rio. The fourth row just proves how similar they are, depicting that their trunks are the exact same size.
In addition to slightly superior fuel economy, the Accent has plenty of great features and content throughout that makes it a great option, plus its own unique design.
