The Hyundai Ioniq is still a relatively young vehicle, having just entered the market four years ago in 2016. Even still, it has firmly established its place within the compact hybrid sedan segment. We’ve been pitting our Hyundai vehicles against their Ford counterparts lately and considering Ford has been hacking and slashing its sedan lineup, there aren’t a ton of sedans left. Although the Ford Fusion is a midsize sedan, we thought we’d see how the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq compares to the 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid.
Even a cursory glance through the table above will show just how different these two hybrid sedans are from one another. The Hyundai Ioniq is able to achieve a massive 14 miles per gallon more when driving through the city, with that advantage increasing to 18 mpg by hopping onto the highway. That’s going to translate to some pretty hefty savings at the gas pump in the long run!
Of course, the Ford Fusion does fire back by offering more horsepower than the Ioniq. This was to be expected as it’s a larger vehicle, but also due to the major fuel economy difference. However, although not depicted above, the Ioniq does weigh 672 pounds less than the Ford Fusion Hybrid, which does impact its power advantage a bit. Even still, 49 horsepower is a pretty big leg up for the Ford sedan.
Finally, we turned to trunk space in the fourth row of the table, another area we were pretty sure of beforehand. The Ioniq is a fastback sedan, meaning it has a hatchback design intended to create extra space for cargo, despite belonging to a smaller segment. The Ioniq offers 14.5 cubic feet of extra space to fill.
