There seem to be two really big juggernauts on the automotive marketplace today, and that’s either utility vehicles or electrification. Hybrid models have been around since the turn of the century, but they’ve seen a surge in popularity over the past couple of years, and vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq are the product of that. We thought we’d see how our incredible fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle measures up to one of its biggest and newest competitors by pitting the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq against the 2020 Honda Insight.
Honda is known for building very reliable and fuel-efficient vehicles, and while the table can’t exactly touch on reliability, it certainly shows the Honda Insight falling short when it comes to fuel economy. In the first row we took a look at city fuel efficiency, an area in which the Ioniq achieves an extra two miles per gallon. That makes things seem like they’re going to be quite comparable from the get-go, but the second row wipes that out by highlighting the Ioniq model’s extra 10 miles per gallon on the highway. That’s a huge advantage in the Hyundai sedan’s favor, and leads to quite a lot of saving at the gas pump in the long run.
Of course, that huge fuel efficiency advantage does leave the door open for the Insight to deliver superior horsepower, though the difference here could’ve been much worse. The Ioniq generates 47 horsepower less than the Insight, so it’s up to you whether you prefer more efficiency or power. However, to sweeten the pot, the Ioniq model’s liftback nature means it offers far more space for cargo. More specifically, it provides an extra 11.4 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats.
