The Hyundai Ioniq has quickly risen to the top of the hybrid sedan marketplace thanks to its absolutely incredible fuel efficiency, naturally the most important aspect of any hybrid vehicle. Despite the fact that it has only been around since 2016, its name is being spoken alongside some of the most popular, long-running hybrids around. We thought we’d see just how well the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq truly does measure up to one of these competitors by pitting it against the 2020 Kia Optima Hybrid in a side-by-side comparison.
The Kia Optima Hybrid as introduced in 2011 as the hybrid counterpart to the brand’s popular sedan from the turn of the century. Having been around for nearly a decade now, it’s certainly carved out a space for itself in the hybrid sedan segment. How does the Ioniq stack up?
We put together the table up above to give you a better look at just how these two sedans measure up to one another. As we mentioned, fuel economy is obviously the most important aspect in hybrid vehicles, so that’s where we kicked things off in the table. The first row takes a look at city fuel efficiency, in which the Ioniq get travel 17 extra miles on every gallon of fuel. On the highway, highlighted in the second row, the advantage shrinks a bit but only to 14 mpg. These are massive advantages that clearly place the Ioniq out in front, offering a ton of savings at the pump over time.
However, the third row does highlight the fact that the Kia Optima Hybrid offers superior power, which is often the trade-off for superior efficiency. Whether or not 50 horsepower, which is a pretty decent advantage, is enough to make up for the economy deficit is up to you. To sweeten the pot for the Ioniq, though, the final row highlights that its trunk is nearly twice as big as the Optima Hybrid’s, thanks to its liftback nature.
